Auckland – Karekare + Piha

As a photographer who recently made the move from the Cayman Islands to Auckland, New Zealand, my anticipation to explore the local beaches was palpable. While Auckland City itself boasts beautiful beaches, parks, and woodland walks, my adventure took me a bit further afield to the hidden treasures of Karekare Beach, Karekare Waterfall, and Piha Beach.

Karekare Beach, nestled on Auckland’s untamed west coast, is a revelation of dramatic landscapes and untouched beauty. Known for its appearance in the movie “The Piano,” this beach features dark sands, powerful surf, and an unspoiled wilderness that sets the stage for extraordinary photoshoots. Remarkably, when we arrived, we had the entire beach to ourselves.

A short stroll from Karekare Beach unveils the enchanting Karekare Waterfall. This majestic 30-meter cascade descends from the Waitakere Ranges, gracefully emptying into a serene pool below. Finding this hidden gem can be a bit of an adventure in itself, as there are no signs. Keep an eye out for the waterfall on the opposite side of the valley, then spot a small downhill footpath along the roadside.

Our next stop led us to the awe-inspiring Mercer Bay Loop Track, offering a sweeping panorama of the Auckland coast. This coastal hike treats you to breathtaking views of the Tasman Sea along rugged cliffs. Be sure to bring along a water bottle, especially on sun-soaked days.

Our final destination for the day was Piha Beach, renowned for its powerful surf and iconic Lion Rock formation, which presents diverse photographic opportunities. The black iron sand grants a captivating texture to your images. I had an absolute blast capturing surfers tackling the waves, surrounded by the rugged cliffs.

Now that I’ve explored these remarkable locations, I eagerly anticipate taking couples and families to these sites. The accessibility and picturesque backdrops of these beaches make them perfect settings for creating cherished photographic memories.
